Tamper
It can be manually or mechanically operated. Manually operated rammer has a mass of about 5 kg which is dropped from a height of 30 cm and used to compact the soil to confined areas. Mechanically operated rammer has a mass of 30 kg to 100 kg which is lifted by machine and dropped down vertically to compact the soil. In special cases, it has a mass of about 1000 kg.

Smooth Wheel Roller
Smooth Wheel Roller has one big drum on front axle; and two small drums on rear axle. These drums are hollow, which can be filled up either by water or dry sand depending upon the weight of the roller. The mass of the roller ranges from 2 tonnes to 3 tonnes. This roller is used to compact the cohesionless soil and to give the finishing touch on the surfaces compacted by other type of rollers at the end of day's work. If the roller has single drum on each axle, it is known a Tandon Type Smooth Wheel Roller.

Pneumatic Rubber Tyre Roller
This roller has maximum 15 rubber tyre wheels, which are arranged in front and rear axles in such a way that it compacts the whole area covered by the roll. This roller is used to compact both cohesive and cohesionless soils. The mass of the roller ranges from 5 tonnes to 200 tonnes. The wheels are filled up by compressed air which can produce contact pressure in the range of 200 to 1000 kN per metre square.

Sheep Foot Roller
This roller can be either smooth wheel roller or pneumatic rubber tyre roller fitted with numerous projections, known as Tamping feet, randomly on the surface of the drum of the wheel. Length of the projection is 20 cm. Cross-section area of the tamping foot is 35 to 56 cm square.
Width of drum = 120 to 180 cm
Diameter of drum = 90 to 190 cm
These rollers are used to compact the cohesive soil and compacts the soil by kneading action. The contact pressure developed will be in the range of 700 to 4,200 kn per metre square.
